I’m almost a little bit jealous - it’s very rare to snow down here in Bournemouth though we have had bitter cold 🥶 temperatures and deep frosts since Christmas most days - but sunshine ☀️ too. Snowy scenes are lovely to look at - but a little annoying when it comes to practicality.

The hate online is real. I recently had someone tell me I came across like a middle aged white women. Well duh! It wasn’t the meanest comment by far, but the weirdest. There’s a lot of Trump supporters online where their job seems to be having a go at anyone who disses the orange idiot. I did not deign to reply - this was on threads which I think I’ll delete. Never use it and it clearly become like X.

Hope you get some milder weather returning soon :)

Only a bit jealous! It would be a real pain if I wanted to get anywhere but thankfully I don’t have to. The farmer did ask if we wanted our drive done & I was like, no we’ll just go out when the snow melts! Although if it had gone on another few days I might have taken him up on the offer.

A middle aged white woman 🤣 - stating facts as an insult. It’s like when people say ‘you’re woke’ - yep, I try to be! I dabbled with threads in the early days and some people rave about it, but yes, it definitely has an X vibe and do we really need to be introducing more social into our lives? I can't keep up with the 3 platforms I'm on - I include Substack in that.

I like your outlook - and I think if I lived where you are I’d be the same about staying put until the snow melted. Great excuse to not go anywhere :)

Yes social media - and seeing as how I work with it too - is a bit of an angry beast a lot of the time. I did get rid of X a while back - but there may be times I need it for work and I may have to make a basic account to do that. But Threads is in no way needed so 👋🏻

Keep cosy!

Lovely photos. Round here, many farmers are contracted by the council to remove fallen trees and clear snow etc. from the roads. (We were neighbours for a few days in the dales. We had knee high snow this time last year which stuck around for over a week. Less than a centimetre of it this weekend though.)

We were neighbours for a few days...did you move in next door just as we were leaving? It's so beautiful with the snow in the Dales but again, the same problem of being completely stuck unless you're on the main road.

Oh that's a good point and to be fair, it might be similar up here. I know many people are multi skilled up here. We have skilled and trained locals contracted by Scottish Power to do basic fixes. When we had a low voltage problem, I logged the issue with SP and an hour later I got a message from an islander to say it was fixed!!

Yes, your names came up recently (unfortunately I've forgotten in what context) and of course you're easily googleable. A speed read of 3+ years of Orkney living later - seems like we a fair bit in common.

It's so clear you have a genuine community spirit there! It isn't just the farmers - you and your husband went out to check on neighbors you knew might not be prepared as well as you were. That's pretty terrific.

I understand how the cabin fever can kick in during that kind of a time. During the covid lockdown, especially 2020, I lived alone and had no one close to me in the same city other than some cousins who I usually saw at holidays. My grocery store runs were the highlight of my weeks, and I often ordered things online just to have something to look forward to. And the truth is, getting out and about physically gets you out of your head, which is healthy in so many ways!

I'm glad you and your neighbors made it through safely and are doing well!

There is a real community spirit and it’s been lovely to have been welcomed into it. I was a bit nervous before moving that we would be hated incomers, but there are quite a few of us and a lot of Orcadian - Incomer relationships, so we feel very at home.

If we didn’t have the strong community feel, life could be very difficult and isolating. SO I feel very lucky we chose Orkney, as it seems to be across the board. I’m sure it is in other island communities too but you never do know!

Lockdown sounds really hard Doc and get how the grocery runs were your highlight of the week. I had Erik at home of course, but i also got myself a job as a relief care worker so it was a really social time for me. Usually Four staff and 6 residents!
